Mid-Atlantic United Methodist Foundation Becomes First Faith Foundation to Earn Certification for Fiduciary Excellence

The Mid-Atlantic United Methodist Foundation (MAUMF) is proud to announce that it has become the first faith community foundation to earn certification from The Centre for Fiduciary Excellence (CEFEX), an independent certification organization.

MAUMF is a non-profit foundation that manages investments for Methodist churches. MAUMF serves 1,800 churches and 392,000 Methodists across Eastern Pennsylvania, Peninsula-Delaware and Baltimore-Washington Conferences. MAUMF reinvests half of its investment management fees to provide education to all churches in the three conferences, regardless of whether they hold investments with MAUMF. This education includes working with pastors and other church leaders to improve their financial management practices and help them foster a culture of generous giving.

“As our assets under management approach $100 million, this third-party certification of our sound investment practices and procedures is very gratifying,” said Jack Brooks, MAUMF executive director. “Churches choose to invest with us first because they know we understand their ministry, but it’s just as important they know we follow the best practices in the industry.”

CEFEX provides an independent recognition of a firm’s conformity to a defined Standard of Practice. It implies that a firm can demonstrate adherence to the industry’s best practices, and is positioned to earn the public’s trust. This registration serves investors who require assurance that their investments are being managed according to commonly accepted best practices. The annual certification process involves a detailed review of documents, investments and procedures followed by on-site interviews with key personnel.

“Our board is pleased to be the first foundation of our kind to earn CEFEX certification,” said Thomas Black, president of the MAUMF board. “It was a rigorous process for the board, our staff as well as our financial partners. But it sends a strong, positive message to our community and has helped us refine and improve our processes even further.”
