On Wednesday, January 17th, 2024, a committed group of folks from several area churches braved sub-freezing temperatures to attend a seminar at Newtown UMC, in Newtown, PA.   This event for the East District of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference was supported by the Foundation and the presenter was Jack Brooks, Executive Director.  A light supper was served and folks enjoyed some fellowship prior to the talk.

The topic was Funding Ministry Through Legacy Giving, Endowments and Major Gifts, an issue that is critically important for all churches.  Those present heard about the importance of helping congregations understand the ways in which legacy giving and major gifts can bless their church.  Many churches rely on tithes and offerings to fund ministry, and as worship attendance is falling across the country, those funds are becoming insufficient to keep up with expenses.  On the other hand, if church leadership is intentional about highlighting the opportunities for mission and ministry if members were to include the church in their estate planning, then additional sources of funds can be accessed.

Attendees learned about some easy ways to encourage an increase in these gifts in their own churches.  Including the church as a 10% beneficiary in a will, or for distributions from a retirement fund or a life insurance policy, are some simple options.  Many churchgoers have never considered these options because they weren’t made aware of them.  An insert in your church bulletin is an easy way to facilitate getting the word out.  Testimonials from members who have already considered the church in their estate planning, and who are excited about the ministry that their legacy will support, can also be powerful.

The Foundation can assist churches in setting up a legacy giving/major gifts program.  If you would like further information contact us today at admin@midatlanticfoundation.org.

If your church would like to host an evening like this in your area, the Foundation would be happy to facilitate.
