#GivingTuesday https://www.givingtuesday.org/ is a global day of giving that has been fueled by the power of social media and online collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.
The trend of blending outreach and support through social media in addition to traditional fundraising continues to grow. #GivingTuesday originated from the 92nd Street Y in New York City. Since 2013, the action galvanized by a single hashtag has been remarkable. #GivingTuesday continues to build and engage people in ways that many didn’t think possible.
- Over 1,640,000 gifts generated
- Financial Commitments of over $177,000,000 have been made
- 98 Countries Participate
- Countless new volunteer are generated for organizations
Key to this approach is the use of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to identify a project and build awareness in people while making a simple appeal. This year the Gates Foundation has set out to make giving count even more, posting on Facebook the intent to match $2,000,000 of gifts made during GivingTuesday.
Any official charity (501 c 3) with a specific initiative or project such as a school, community group, or religious organization is invited to get involved. On the website you will find resources for Organizations, Individuals, Tools, and Much More. With a great plan and some preparation, you can lead your organization toward participating in a future GivingTuesday.
